Spring Planting 2018

During Field Day this year we got a lot of planting done. We planted potatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers, popcorn, beans, and squash. Of course we did more weeding too!
The wheat and rye that were planted last fall are heading up and looking gorgeous.

In its ever-changing identity, the garden is now turning into a history garden. We are hoping it will be a resource for the whole school to use across the curriculum.

We will bring some of what we grow to the Haven Food Shelf as usual, and some of the vegetables will be served in the HMMS cafeteria.

Part of the garden is dedicated to Old World crops: wheat, rye, cucumbers and carrots. Part is dedicated to New World crops: corn, beans, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers. The herb garden includes herbs that have been grown throughout the ages. We also have a little patch of upland rice. We'll see how that grows!

The two days before Thanksgiving break, we made cornmeal pancakes in class from the corn we grew. We ground the corn by hand so it was really fresh. We ate them with butter and real maple syrup, of course. They were different from regular pancakes, very corny and kind of crunchy. Some student loved them while others, well, not so much. We had a lot of fun!
On the second day, we also served mashed squash from the garden.

We're hoping we get some good seed of this heritage wheat variety from France. The seed we planted last fall was too old and didn't germinate well. This plant is the only one that germinated and then made it through the winter, but it should provide us with seed to plant in September.
